The common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is plagues that flesh receives. The most widespread fallacy of all is that colds caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes. During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches, cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds. In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp, naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose. If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter?Despite the most pains-taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on. No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors such as aspirin, but all they do is relieve the symptoms.

(71)____You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating , sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.(72)____ A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. (73)____Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. (74)_____If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

(75)_____ You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

  A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

  B. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

  C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

  D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

  E. Maybe you are an average student.

  F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

  G. This will help you understand the next class.

  第三节 写作(满分30分)

  One possible version:

  Dear Wang Ping,

I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in UK. Now,I’d like to tell you something about it.

First, you may have problems about the language which you think you have learned so well. You may find it difficult to communicate with the natives, because many of them have a strong accent. Besides, you may not get used to the western food here or even hate to have it. What’s more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning.

However, you needn’t worry about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and get to love the place, and I’ll also try my best to help you when necessary.

  Best wishes!

  Yours,

  Li Hua
