Mark’s father used to tell a story about how difficult it was to change things in this world. Once when he was staying at a large hotel he noticed one night from the window a poor man sitting on a bench in the park nearby. As it was winter there were few people in the park, and no one else was sitting down.
The next morning Mark’s father looked out of the window again and saw that the man was still there. As he had to walk through the park later he stopped by the man’s bench and spoke to him.“Excuse my asking, but did you sleep there all night?”“Yes,”the man said,“and it’s all right. I have a dream that one day I shall sleep in that hotel.”Mark’s father felt so sorry for the man that he offered to pay for a room that night. He spoke to the manager, who was surprised but agreed to do what Mark’s father asked.
The next morning there was a knock on the door. Mark’s father opened it and there stood the man.“I just came to thank you,”he said.“Why don’t you stay another night?”Mark’s father asked. The man hesitated.“No, I don’t think so. Thank you very much, all the same.”
Mark’s father asked why.“Well, you see, in the park I used to dream about a warm comfortable bed in the hotel, and I slept very well. But all last night I dreamed about my old hard bench, and I slept very badly indeed.”
